This course will address the complex issues involved in abuse and neglect of children. It assumes a basic knowledge of child protection procedures.

All managers and practitioners having contact with children and their families.
Aims for the course:
To develop the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and respond appropriately to concerns about children's safety within a multicultural society. To understand some underlying issues which may make parenting more challenging.
Course Outline:
The course will address specific issues which impact on child protection including domestic violence and mental health. It also considers the vulnerability of young people at risk of sexual abuse and exploitation and the challenges of risk assessment and decision making. Lessons from Inquiry reports underpins the learning in this course
Objectives:
At the end of the course the delegate will be able to;
- Identify links between child protection and domestic violence and be aware of the impact on children
- Understand approaches to working with families where domestic violence may be an issue
- Understand lessons learnt from child abuse inquiry reports
- Consider the effects of mental health problems in parents on the ability to protect and care for their children.
- Undertake risk assessments
- Consider decision making in complex child protection situations
- Be aware of the risk factors associated with sexual abuse and exploitation of children and young people.
- Understand the underpinning legislation and guidelines on working with vulnerable young people
