Safeguarding Adults: a one day awareness course

Course profile
This course aims to deliver basic awareness training on Safeguarding Adults to all staff and volunteers involved in the support of all vulnerable adults.

Trainers will ensure that there is a clear understanding of the background issues relating to Safeguarding Adults, what is required of all organisations through the Department of Health guidelines 'No Secrets' 2000 and the Safeguarding Adults Framework 2005 and how your own organisations policies and procedures intend to accommodate this guidance and translate it into practice.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course participants should have:

  • Understood the principles outlined within No Secrets and the Safeguarding Adults Framework guidance and their role in the  course content.
  • Been given the opportunity to discuss what is meant by abuse and how it presents.
  • Be introduced to the types of abuse and be given examples and indicators.
  • Gain a better understanding what makes a person vulnerable and what is meant by vulnerability or risk factors.
  • Had the opportunity to explore the concept of 'significant harm and how to define it and assess it.
  • Be given a brief update on current legislation including the Safeguarding Vulnerable groups Act 2006 and the creation of the new Independent Safeguarding Authority, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the new Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards 2009.
  • Gain a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities and the policies and procedures in relation to responding to allegations of abuse –the "do's" and the "don'ts".
  • Think more proactively about the positive steps they can make individually and collectively to the Prevention of Abuse and understand the move away from reactive protective strategies.
  • An understanding of the role of person centred care plans in helping to empower service users to develop awareness of abuse issues in order to better safeguard themselves.
  • To encourage a more proactive response to their own organisations whistle-blowing policy and how to report bad practice.
  • Had the opportunity to look at equalities and diversity issues through practical case examples.
  • Had the opportunity to understand their responsibility in relation to the wider Interagency framework.
  • Had the opportunity to think about the support systems in place for themselves and for service users in the event of a disclosure of abuse by them or against them.
