Supporting Individuals and their Key People through the Processes of preparing for Death and of Dying

Aims:
To inform, guide and support Care Workers in quality caring of Individuals and Key People in the preparation for death and the processes of dying
Objectives:
Delegates will be able to
- define their levels of confidence and comfortableness in talking about death and dying with each other; their colleagues and with Individuals and their key people and how they will continue to develop in this area
- state who they will be able to seek support, guidance and information from within their workplace setting in relation to themselves and their knowledge and skills for caring for Individuals
- explain what physical, emotional, spiritual and psychosocial components, including cultural and religious aspects, of palliative care are and how these relate to their roles and responsibilities, including bereavement processes
- identify and explain aspects of palliative care that they would be able to carry out as part of their care practices and symptom control as part of a multi professional team
- discuss the need for good communication in caring for dying people, defining examples and techniques
- demonstrate and awareness of moral dilemmas and topical issues related to dying and death from illnesses
- identify methods of locating resources and working with other health and social care workers to assist in the care of Individuals and Key People
- demonstrate knowledge of the related legislation; own organisations' relevant policies and procedures and appropriate reporting and recording procedures at all stages of caring for Individuals who are requiring palliative care and after death.
