Managing Violence and Aggression
Introduction
This very difficult subject is approached in a sensitive and creative way and aims to help delegates to develop safe practice. The cycle of aggression is explored from predisposing factors; risk is identified and crisis planned for. The management of violence and talk down techniques are taught.
Please note this course does not teach physical restraint.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course delegates should have:
- Have developed a positive and proactive approach in the pursuit of avoiding violence
- Should have understood factors and techniques to promote the safe management of aggression within a framework of sound ethics and good practice
- Should have understood how this material relates to mental health issues

- The origins of violence in developmental, psychological, social, cultural, personality, environmental etc context
- Healthy aggression
- Working creatively with aggression
- Living with fear; violence experienced by oppressed groups
- Cultures of violence in institutions
- Factors that contribute towards violent behaviour
- Listening as a means of diffusion
- Working with people who habitually behave in a damaging way
- Rights of the support worker
- Learning after an event
- Developing appropriate policies and the importance of record keeping
