Challenging Behaviour - Learning Disability
Course Profile
This is a two day course and seeks to address the complexity of behaviours that challenge the service and its delivery. This course can be tailor made to a specific service e.g. learning disability, mental health, or general care.
This topic is often misunderstood and therefore responded to in inappropriate ways by staff, thus potentially escalating difficult behaviours and actions by both service users and staff. Fear, on both sides is often a contributing factor. Issues of compliance and communication are part of the picture when addressing behaviours that challenge.
Course content will include:
- Current views in relation to past working practices
- Legislation and local policy and procedures
- Safeguarding issues
- Reporting and recording
- Assessment and tools to assess; health & safety risk assessment
- Prevention and de-escalation techniques
- 'Triggers'; Causes and contributors
- Presentations of behaviours that may be interpreted as challenging
- Staff attitudes and interpretations
- Culture & beliefs: service users and staff
- Communication
- Working as a team
- Planning & guidelines
- Skills and techniques including 'ABC'; calming techniques; non-aversive intervention techniques; maintaining respect and relationships; valuing and resolution; evaluating and individual care planning and risk reduction for future; involving the service user in processes of management and decision making
- Staff support: care, support and mutual understanding and respect for each other within the team and ongoing training
Training Methodology: a mix of methods will be applied to ensure interest and learning.
Delivery of each course will be preceded by research into the organisation's requirements and course adapted accordingly.
