Epilepsy Awareness
Suitable for:
All staff/support workers/carers who work with service users with Epilepsy.
Aims:
The course aims to help delegates gain a broader understanding of epilepsy in order to provide an effective service to people who may have this condition.
By the end of the course, delegates will:
- have defined what epilepsy is, and listed the different types of epilepsy and types of seizures
- have discussed the cycle of emotional and psychological stages that individuals go through, in order for you to provide the right support to them
- have discussed steps to take in responding if someone is having a seizure
- Be able to state some of the neurological implications of anti-epileptic medication

- possible triggers of seizures
- how to respond during a seizure
- anti-epileptic medication and neurological implications
- invasive medication good practice and registration requirements

- discuss alternative and complementary therapies
- Looked at the prevalence of Epilepsy and people who have a learning disability
- Looked at the social impact and consequences of epilepsy on those who have the condition
- Looked at your own Duty of Care in relation to support of those people with epilepsy - good practice in care homes
- Risk assessments and risk management - experience in the community
