Promoting the Identity Needs of Children of Multiple Heritage

Target Audience:     
Children and Families Social Work Practitioners and other CSD Staff

Course Aim:
To raise awareness of the particular issues relating to identity needs of children of multiple heritages and explore ways of working to promote a positive sense of identity.

Course Content:

  • Defining identity within family, society, peer groups and establishments.
  • Exploration of the impacts on identity, self-esteem and psychological health and achievements when children fall outside dominant racialised categories within communities or have personal identity issues.
  • Socialising and celebrating only one of the cultural backgrounds of the children and of prejudice from both Black and White groups.
  • Models of identity and advantages and disadvantages faced by children of multiple heritages will be explored.
  • Working positively with children of multiple heritages using current research.

Course Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, delegates will have:

  • A clear understanding of the terms 'heritage' and how we build work on identity into all aspects of plans for young people
  • A clear awareness of the possible issues facing children of multiple heritages
  • Knowledge of the current models and research to enable good working practices and positive approaches when engaging with children and their families.
  • Strategies to work effectively with these young people and to build steps into the care planning process that address these identity issues
  • Increased confidence to access resources and have discussions with young people that address their heritage, in a way that they find accessible
  • Had an opportunity to reflect about the young people they are working with and how they are better able to meet their needs.
