Assessing and Supporting Parents with a Learning Disability
This course is being developed for those who are required to assess for parenting skills in parents with a learning disability. It seeks to inform the delegate about learning disabilities and how this can be understood, supported and assessed when looking at parenting. Course candidates should have skills in assessing and knowledge of what information they require regarding parenting.
Parents with a learning disability can, with the right assessment and support, be good, caring parents. Often the level of understanding of learning disabilities by some professionals can hinder the chances of the parents being able to gain the support they need in order to develop and continue their parenting abilities. By gaining an understanding of how people with a learning disability may experience difficulties when faced by or trying to gain support from authorities or agencies provided to give assistance, candidates can help to prevent these parents from failing at the first hurdle and be more understood.
This will also help candidates be more confident in their assessing of this group for the safety of the children as well as the parents involved.
Aim
To create a better understanding of the issues facing parents with a learning disability to enable more effective assessment of parenting skills.
Learning Outcomes
Candidates Delegates will be:
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of learning disabilities to assist them in their assessment and supporting processes
- Aware of the complexities of assessing and interpreting parenting skills in parents with a LD
- Able to identify ways of supporting and enabling parents with a LD to gain support from family and other agencies
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of the inequalities faced by parents with a LD and how to work towards overcoming these in services provided
- Aware of relevant legislation
Methods will include participation and case study working.
