Moving and Handling Complex needs - Children and young people
Target group:
This programme is for all clinical staff who are required to move/assist in the moving of children and young people with physical and learning needs
Aims:
- To comply with legal obligations relating to moving and handling
- To assess moving and handling risks
- To develop safer moving and assisting for the child, self and colleagues
Course content:
- Legal and professional responsibilities
- Choice, rights and promoting them.
- Working at child height level
- Two person assisted handling
- The non weight bearing child and moving and handling
- Children with variable muscle tone requiring special handling techniques
- Risk Assessment and safe positioning for staff supporting children in fixed positions for periods of time
- Assisting children with physical disabilities in and out of vehicles
- Dressing children with restricted movement
- Compliance which may affect moving and handling-behaviour, comprehension, speech
- Legislation and use of equipment
- Appropriate use of equipment and management of inappropriate home equipment
- Moving and Handling Risk Assessment and Analysis
Objectives:
- Knowledge of health and safety and other relevant legislation, guidance and local policies in order to ensure compliance
- Understanding of the application of safe principles of moving and handling as it pertains to current work practices and methods
- Knowledge and understanding of safer handling techniques including current good practice moves and awareness of equipment available
- Knowledge and understanding of safe principles as outlined in policy guidance and training when working with powered equipment and small handling aids
- Ability to assess moving and handling activities and identify practical solutions to reduce risk
- Ability to comply with organisation documentation, recording and reporting systems
- Knowledge of how good back health contributes to a healthy spine
