Aims and Learning Outcomes for the Programme

Day 1: Foundation Knowledge in Manual Handling

Aim:
The first day will afford the student the foundation knowledge in manual handling law and relevant related legislation. They will revisit the anatomy & physiology of the spine and biomechanics of the body in relation to manual handling. They will visit methods of teaching these subjects to their students.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of day 1 the participants will:-

  • Understand the role and responsibilities as a Key Worker Trainer for their Organisation
  • Gain a sound knowledge of Manual Handling Legislation and awareness of related Health & Safety legislation relevant to Manual Handling in Care Settings.
  • Gain a greater and more in-depth knowledge of biomechanics and anatomy and physiology of the spine in relation to musculoskeletal injuries and safer manual handling.
  • Understand the Safe Principles of Manual Handling and their relation to Risk Assessment and Safer Practice.
  • Be aware of current thinking towards unsafe manual handling moves and the rationale.
  • Gain an understanding of the most relevant points that should be taught during a Manual Handling Course
  • Reflect on the subjects covered in day 1.

Day 2: Basic Principles of delivering training and assessment

Aim:
This one-day session will give participants the opportunity to learn the basic principles of delivering training and assessment.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the day the participants will be able to:-

  • Structure a training session
  • Identify preferred learning styles
  • Examine various methods of delivery
  • Manage potential difficult situations and keep the session on track
  • Explore various assessment methods
  • Provide effective feedback
  • Monitor and evaluate sessions

Days 3-5: Manual Handling and Risk Assessment Techniques
Aims:

  • To explore and develop a sound understanding of manual handling risk assessment techniques and processes involved in monitoring and evaluation
  • To enable participants to assess the risk involved when moving a person
  • To develop a sound understanding of how to demonstrate and teach staff about safe handling techniques and how to assess risk

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the day the participants will have:-

  • Demonstrated, via group tasks, a sound and working knowledge of the risk assessment processes
  • Demonstrated a working knowledge of how to assess risk, consider, and apply safe practical solutions to handling problems
  • An up-to-date knowledge and skill base of safe handling techniques
  • A sound knowledge of "Best practice" in relation to handling
  • An awareness of current equipment available
  • A sound understanding of the skills required, and toolkit that is necessary to facilitate other staff about risk assessment and safe handling techniques

The programme is very interactive and participative and will throughout the 5 days explore teaching styles and methods which participants can consider when delivering all the components of a manual handling course
