Course Aim:
This two-day workshop explores the purpose of supervision and how it fits into effective performance management. This course has been designed to enable front line managers, supervisors/team leaders to reflect on their working practices and explore methods of providing effective supervision.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Understand why supervision is essential - National Minimum Standards
  • Prepare for a supervision interview
  • Develop time management skills within the supervision process
  • Prepare individual team member's plans and goals
  • Develop the skills to manage conflict
  • Understand the rules of giving and receiving feedback
  • Analysis feedback and use to improve service delivery
  • Address areas of stress or personal issues
  • Explore professional boundaries
  • Recognise barriers to peak performance and facilitate change where necessary

Course Content

Day 1

  • What is supervision training
  • The role of the supervisor
  • Relevant legislation - policies and procedures
  • Why, what and how individuals perform
  • The structure of a supervision session - introduction, development and monitoring
  • Effective feedback
  • Supervision Exercise

Participants will be required to take learning back to the workplace and apply to a supervision session.  On the 2nd Day participants are given the opportunity to feedback to the group his/her experience.  Advice and guidance will be given on issues raised.

Day 2

  • Consolidating the session through effective summaries and linkages to the next stage of performance
  • Feedback from practiced supervision session
  • Strengths and areas for further development identified
  • Further practice supervision sessions
  • Further practice active listening skills

Presentation, group interaction; small and large group exercises; case studies; experiential learning
