Safer Recruitment
Course Overview
The abuse cases that have come to light clearly demonstrate that
even those who are not in direct contact with children in their daily
working lives can still present as much of a risk as those who are
considered to be "frontline". When determining the necessary elements
of a vetting, screening and selection process for any position, be it
for frontline or ancillary staff, a volunteer or student, the widest
possible consideration should be given to the potential risks to
children.
In August 2002, Soham became the centre of international media interest after the disappearance of 2 local ten-year-old girls, Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. Following the convictions of Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr. The Bichard Inquiry was formally opened in January 2004 in response to Government's call for an inquiry. The findings of the inquiry were published in June 2004.
